One of the most
satisfying aspects of lutherie is to be
afforded the opportunity to resurrect
what are abandoned or abused guitars.
The guitar shown here, a mid-1960’s
Gibson Melody Maker, was rescued by me
after having purchased it in an on-line
auction.
When it arrived at my shop, it
was virtually devoid of most of its
electronics and finish, and had been
“customized” by a prior owner who
attempted to route for a neck pickup
with appeared to be a butter knife.
Realizing that it would not be feasible
to restore it to its original
single-pickup configuration, it was
turned into a period-correct two-pickup
version. The existing single pickup was
supplemented by another of the same 1964
vintage, with new electronics, hardware
and finish faithful to the original. It
is now owned by a guitarist in Southern
California.
